HTML Export Problem

Postby pdurusau » Mon Apr 04, 2011 12:01 pm

Using the royal example, I exported the topic map while on the topic Diana Francis/ Spencer/. That became my starthere.html page.

None of the links on that page work. I have verified that none of the pages it is attempting to point to exist in the export directory.

The export log consists of:

Generated output file '/home/patrick/nobackup/-447194378.html'

statements so not terribly helpful.

Is there a requirement that I start at the "root" topic?

Thanks!

Patrick

PS: Using the latest release of Wandora on Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit version.

Hello Patrick

Wandora features several ways of exporting topics and associations as a HTML page collection.

To export whole layer stack i.e. all topic maps in Wandora, start HTML page export with top menu option 'File > Export > Export topic map as series of HTML files...'. This method should generate one HTML file for each topic in topic map. In the case of example topic map Royal92, Wandora should generate 7591 HTML files (+few indexes) to the export directory.

Generated HTML pages have links to other HTML pages. These links makes HTML page collection a browsable and static (although dull) visualization of the topic map.

As said above, there are several ways of doing the HTML page export. Wandora user may start the HTML page export in *context* of a topic selection and a topic map layer, also. The context actually implicitly selects which topics are exported. For example, selecting single topic in any topic table, association table for example, and choosing context menu option 'Topics > Export > Export selection as a HTML page collection...' exports only selected topic. Thus, some links written in topic HTML visualization may end up to be dead ends.

I suppose you started the export feature in context of a topic selection containing only one topic. As a result, Wandora exports only one topic as a HTML page. To export whole topic map, start export with top menu option 'File > Export > Export topic map as series of HTML pages...'.

You don't need to start export at the root topic. The topic which is open in topic panel is exported as 'starthere.html'. If you have no topic open in topic panel, Wandora omits 'starthere.html'. 'index.html' is a link list of all exported topics.

I hope you manage to export whole topic map. If this answer didn't help, please drop a line.

Kind Regards,
Aki / Wandora Team

p.s. The context in which tools are started is very important feature in Wandora -- it defines the topic set which is fed to the tool.

Export still fails

Postby pdurusau » Mon Apr 04, 2011 9:18 pm

Aki,

I have succeeded in exporting the schema as a topic map, also with broken links.

The "context" selection isn't clear nor is it easy to avoid (or set at the users option).

"some links as dead ends?" All of them with Diana as a starting topic. Why would I want dead links?

I used the File > Export > Export topic map as a series of HTML pages...

The interplay of the topic panel and the export is probably where I am making my mistake.

I want to get to where I can reliably export one of the sample maps before I try something I have written that I want to show as static HTML. (server security reasons)

That will require changing some of the heavily documented velocity templates. ;-)

I am keeping notes.

Hello

Wandora indeed had a bug in HTML page export causing broken links in HTML pages. The bug was related to a Velocity macro 'linkTopic' in template file 'resources/gui/export/sitepage.vhtml'. This macro is used to solve a file name for a topic. Topic's file name is based on topic's hash code. It appeared that the macro failed to generate a valid file name sometimes. It is our belief that Velocity failed to evaluate the Java object/method path in macro. Released fix clears the code a little and it seems that the HTML page export now generates valid links between topic pages.

New Wandora application version has been released today (2011-04-06) that fixes this bug.

If you still have problems with Wandora's HTML page export feature, please drop a line.

Kind Regards,
Aki / Wandora Team
