XTM import

Postby mcolmene » Fri Aug 28, 2009 2:57 pm

Hi,
I´m having problems with topic maps import in XTM format.
It seems that merging with Wandora schema don´t work and I can´t see the new layer in the left panel. My topic map has been upload because I can find topics if I perform a search in find tab.
The FAQ for Wandora user says: 'To import XTM and LTM Topic Maps to Wandora you should use File > Import > Merge topic map feature'.
I dont see Merge topic map in that import feature.
If I add wandora class to SI to a topic it (and its instances) became visible.

In addition to this, I think also that Wandora is a great tool. It would be posible to create internationalization .po files?.
I would like translate it to spanish. I´m trying to use topic maps in libraries for education support. Perphaps, fsancho would be interested too.

Thanks in advance,
Best regads

Hello Maria

Thank you for using Wandora. We appreciate your feedback.

When you import your own topic map to Wandora using File > Import > Merge topic map option, your topic map is merged with the current layer. If you have not explicitly created a new layer, it is the Base layer with Wandora schema.

If you wish to import your topic map to a layer of it's own, create a new layer first with menu option Layers > New layer.... Then select the created layer by clicking it. Selected layer is darker than unselected. Now you should have an empty layer in Wandora and it is selected. If you now import a topic map with menu option File > Import > Merge topic map, it is merged with your selected layer and remains separate from Wandora's schema. To make sure your changes doesn't end up to Wandora's schema, you could also lock the Base layer by clicking a lock icon beside layer's name.

As previous instructions may sound a bit complicated, I usually just drag and drop my XTM file from file system to Wandora's layer stack, below the Base layer, and Wandora automatically creates a new layer for the XTM file and merges it with the created layer. This method is much more convenient than playing with layers.

Your other question related to Wandora's topic tree and how you could connect your personal topic map to the tree. Such connection is important as topic tree gives you a nice interface to browse your topic map. In order to connect your topic map to the tree, you can add Wandora class as a class to one of your own topics. After addition, your topic appears below the Wandora class topic. Notice the implicit requirement: your topic map has to be fully connected by class-instance and superclass-subclass relations.

Another, more complicated way to browse your topic map in topic tree, is to create another topic tree tab. Right click the empty space beside Finder tab and select Create new tab option. A dialog window opens and requests tab name, root topic, and tree branch relations (by default Instances and Subclasses). Selecting your own topic as a root topic makes your topic map browsable in Wandora. However, I must emphasize that this "additional topic tree tab" feature has not been tested throughout and may contain bugs.

Your question about internationalizing Wandora is very welcomed. However, I must disappoint you. Unfortunately we have not been thinking of internationalizing while developing Wandora. As a consequence it is very difficult to change the application to use other language than English. It really requires much coding.

I hope I answered your questions. If not, please drop a line.

Kind Regards,

Dear Aki,
Thank you very much. The problem was that I thought that wandora assigned top topics to wandora class automatically.
Now, I have my own nice tab for my topic map.
