Layer merge follows common topic merge rules. If two topics have genuine identifiers they stay separate over the merge. When topics share identifier they collapse into a single topic during the merge: A virtual topic merge turns into a real topic merge. Layer merge is irreversible and you should be careful not loosing important information in merge.
